What Is Aniseikonia

Aniseikonia is an eye condition that can occur when there is an extreme difference in prescription between your eyes, resulting in unequal magnification. In other words, an object might look far bigger with one eye than it does with the other eye.

What Is Amblyopia?

Amblyopia is a condition sometimes called a “lazy eye.”

For the visual system to work properly, the eyes must provide matching signals, which the brain can then merge into a single image. Sometimes, if the eyes have different prescriptions, the brain will start ignoring input from one eye rather than trying to merge mismatching signals.

When the brain ignores one eye, it may not move uniformly with the other eye, causing amblyopia or a lazy eye.

Amblyopia can develop as a result of aniseikonia.

The Problem With Patching

Traditionally, amblyopia has been treated by covering the “strong” eye, (the one the brain had been relying on) to strengthen the “weak” eye (the one the brain had been ignoring).

This type of treatment, called patching, does not account for different prescriptions in each eye, making it ineffective for amblyopia caused by aniseikonia. Patching the “lazy” eye can promote the eye’s defocus and suppression, rather than correcting vision.

How SHAW Lenses Can Treat Amblyopia

The Shaw Lens system is a patchless method of correcting some cases of amblyopia. Within 12-20 weeks, we can usually determine whether this system can correct your child’s amblyopia.

The lenses work by equalizing the images each eye produces, allowing the brain to gather a cohesive picture. The SHAW lens process uses a patent-pending method that mimics the eye’s natural rotation to predict distortions caused by eyeglasses. That information is used to design a lens that reduces or eliminates the distortion other lenses can cause.

If SHAW Lenses are the right choice for your child, they may be able to correct their refractive amblyopia in as little as 1 year, all without eye patches.

The Treatment Process

When patients are fitted for SHAW lenses, we’ll take extensive and thorough measurements to ensure the design is optimized for their needs. After 12 weeks of full-time wear, we will follow-up with the patient to see if best-corrected visual acuity has improved.

If not, we may recommend using atropine drops and a patch in tandem with the lenses to improve vision and symptoms of amblyopia. However, at Clear View Vision Care, we’ll be sure to discuss and recommend what’s best for you and your child.
